The History of the Zion Church Indeed reflects surviving the attitudes of slavery, and segregated “CASTE” system of inequality. The birth of the Zionism began, in New York City, 1786, when the first Methodist Church in America was organized, The James Street Methodist Church. This Church allowed Colored people to attend James Street Church and sit in the balcony. However as fate would have it, the colored church go’ers grew; they became very knowledgeable about Methodism, organization THE BIBLE TEACHINGS and even how to PREACH! The colored worshipers could not PARTICIPATE IN ANY Sacraments or church activities until the WHITE MEMBERS pronounced Benediction. This continued until about 1800 when the large colored following organized themselves, built a church on 125th street and called it ZION METHODIST CHURCH. We as Zionites called it MOTHER ZION. Hence, African was added to Methodist Episcopal then we have AMEZ. The white Methodist clergy taught ministers and Bishops were declared Bishop by the “Laying of Hands” Direct Session of Bishory, GOD’s appointed one over souls. Many Men and Women who were fighters, Leaders for Freedom came from Mother Zion, the FREEDOM CHURCH. Our own Zion Church in Kingsport shared services with the Colored Baptist Church the early 1920’s. A circuit Rider preacher, Rev. Barnes preached to each domination congregation alternately two times a month. The Zion’s and Baptist shared the same building, pews, song books. The Zion people in this shared church house on Oak and Maple Streets organized. They formed Trustees, Secretary; namely Thomas Cartwright, Boston Cartwright, Dennis Smith, Ernest Watson, Dave O’Neal and Stella Cartwright secretary. This group bought a lot in the 800 block of Maple Street and built the Zion Church. The one room, a pot bellied stove, pulpit, and piano (and piano player). By 1937 the AME Zion Church was bricked veneered, had a basement, a Church Bell and a membership that followed Jesus. It was on that day in April 1937, the Zion Church on Maple Street was so named BETHEL. When Bethel A.M.E. Zion church moved from 909 Oak Street, the building was renovated for the church parsonage. Under the leadership of Rev. L. M. Durdan the property was sold and money applied toward the purchase of two houses on Myrtle Street one which is rental property and the brick two story, nine room, 2 bath structures selected for a church parsonage. The Kingsport Nursery School was founded and license by the State operated at Bethel. The popular Laymen’s chorus, first of its kind in the area for more than 10 years, the Genesis Youth Choir that was renowned from Yale University to Chicago. The beautiful stained glass windows of remarkable beauty remodeled the sanctuary and most recently, 2001 paid off a $63,000 bank note. This does not reflect the triumphs of blessing too numerous to mention plus new members, birth of babies, the heritage and legacies bequeathed to us from great members, Pastors, Presiding Elders, and Bishops who have passed on. Today's Scripture for Sunday Morning Service: Psalm 37:23-27 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. 25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. 27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. Romans 6:18-23 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Colors and Seasons: Some of you have been asking about the reasons why liturgical churches change the colors in the Sanctuary at certain times of the year. Why, for example, do Methodists, Anglicans, Lutherans, Roman Catholics, and other similar kinds of Christians use White in some seasons, Purple in others, Red at other times, and Green as well. Why do we change the colors? Is it just for appearance, or is there some rationale behind it. Throughout the history of the Church various colors have been associated with the different "Seasons" of the Church Year. Unlike the secular Calendar, the Church Year runs from Advent, starting either the last Sunday in November or the first Sunday in December, and running through either the second to Christ The King Sunday, on the second to the last or the last Sunday in November. The colors for the season of Advent are Purple and Blue; it is a special time of preparation in which Christians get ready to celebrate the coming of Jesus. The Season of Advent ends on Christmas Eve, with the beginning of the Christmas Season. The colors for Christmas are White and Gold; it is a time of celebration, praise, and thanksgiving for the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. Epiphany ends the Christmas Season, and the Sundays after Epiphany are designated by the color green. The first Sunday focuses on the Baptism of Christ and the last Sunday focuses on his Transfiguration. The color for the season of Lent is purple; this season begins on Ash Wednesday, usually in mid-February, and lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays. The word "Lent" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "lencten," which means "spring." The season is a time of profound preparation for the celebrating of Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts to the faith, and then over time became a period of confession and penance practiced by all Christians. The First Sunday in Lent describes Jesus' temptation by Satan and the Sixth Sunday (Passion or Palm Sunday) deals with Christ's victorious entry into Jerusalem and his subsequent passion and death. Because Sundays are always considered "little Easters," the penitential spirit of Lent should always be held in check with the reminder of the coming resurrection. The Season of Easter is set apart with the colors of white and gold, and begins with the setting of the Sun on Holy Saturday evening and continues through the Day of Pentecost. This season is the joyous time of the Christian year. It focuses, of course, upon Christ's resurrection and ascension of our savior, Jesus Christ The ancient Christian name for this season is "Pasch," derived fro the Hebrew "Pesah," meaning "deliverance" or "Passover." The resurrection is, therefore, closely linked with the Exodus. The origin of the English word "Easter" is disputed, but some scholars think that it may come from the Anglo-Saxon spring goddess Eastre and her annual festival of fertility. Easter Season closes with Pentecost Sunday. The color for Pentecost is red, which symbolizes the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit, which birthed and empowers the Church as the Body of Christ. Contrary to common misconception, there is NO "Pentecost Season." Rather, we designate this period as "the Sundays After Pentecost." The Season is technically known as "Ordinary Time," and the colors for this season are either red or green. In the old Methodist Church it was common practice to use red from Pentecost Sunday through to middle of August, and then switch to Green for the last months of the season (mid August - late November). Since the beginning of the liturgical renewal of the 1970s and 1980s, many UM Churches have gone to green beginning almost immediately after Pentecost; green symbolizes the life of the body of Christ, and hence it is an appropriate color for the Season After Pentecost. However, many others (myself included) prefer to maintain red through the first half of Ordinary Time in order to serve as a reminder that it is only by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit that we, as the Body of Christ, live and move and have our being. Hence, I like for us to follow red with green at some point in mid-August. The change also makes for a refreshing difference in what is, otherwise, the longest -- and hottest -- season of the Church year. © 1993, Rev. Gregory S. Neal All Rights Reserved

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY--BE SAFE=BE BLESSED-BE HAPPY-BE HEALTHY AND PRAISE THE LORD! THANKLESS RESCUER - And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned...and fell down on his face at His feet...So Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?" Luke 17:15-17 Edward Spencer, a ministerial student, was part of a life-saving squad when a ship went aground on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1860. Spencer waded into the freezing water again and again, rescuing a total of 17 passengers and permanently damaging his health. Years later at his funeral, it was mentioned that not one of the people he rescued ever thanked him. Those in attendance at Spencer's funeral must have been thinking: "How could you not thank the person that saved your life?" In all fairness, those who were rescued most likely thought about thanking him, but didn't know where to find him or just became so busy with life that they forgot. As Christians we have so many reasons to thank and praise our Heavenly Father. He not only saved us from the clutches of sin, He also continually provides for us, loves us, blesses us, and guides us. With everything He is and everything He does, how could we not praise Him? We may often think of thanking our Lord and Savior, but we also need to act upon those thoughts, taking time each day to intentionally express our gratitude with praise. Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. - Willaim Arthur Ward -
